Android 2.2 overtakes 2.1 … finally

Android Chart /Android DevelopersIt’s taken a while to be rolled out to smartphones but Android 2.2 has finally become the most used version of Google’s platform.

The version, aka Froyo, is now being used by 43.4 per cent of users, while Android 2.1 has 39.6 per cent of the users.

However, that does of course mean, 16.9 per cent of users are still stuck on older versions of the Android operating system.

The update to Android 2.2 landed on the Nexus One first and was then launched on the HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S.

Recently released phones have the version pre-installed on them – a major selling point for the HTC Desire HD.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia range of smartphones – the X10, X10 Mini, X10 Mini Pro and X8 – are all only just getting updated to Android 2.1 – leaving them lagging behind the competition.

This is especially true when you bear in mind that Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread, is due to be launched early next year with the Samsung Nexus S due to launch with it.

Android Developers published the data based on those accessing the Android Market in the two weeks ending December 1.
